Chennai: Pathway, a voluntary organisation for the welfare of children, proposes to set up a large facility to provide inclusive education for mentally-challenged students.

The institution will be located in a 65-acre plot at Agili village near Melmaruvathur in Kancheepuram district. Pathway has already set up a residential school, which offers high-quality, free education to 135 orphan or destitute children, on the premises.

"We want to set up an inclusive education school for about 500 students. This will help children show empathy and accept those with special needs," Pathway Founder-Director ADSN Prasad said at the inauguration of a building for girl students on Wednesday.

The new building called Ashirwad was built with funding of Rs. 40 lakh from the Peery Foundation in the U.S. Donor Jennifer Peery said the children would grow up to be assets to the community and the nation.

U.S. Consul General David T. Hopper interacted with the students of the Pathway school. "They are very bright and talented children," he commented.

The trust has also identified 12 new students for the school after visiting MGR Nagar, where 42 persons died in a stampede recently.

Several tsunami-affected students and children of HIV infected parents also study here. For details on the trust, call 24928366.
