dated January 6, 1956: Tributes to Rajaji

Tributes to the services rendered by Rajaji to the country in various spheres as a politician, statesman, social reformer and writer were paid on January 4 at a public meeting organised by the Rajaji Birthday Celebration Committee at the Rasika Ranjani Sabha Hall, Mylapore, Madras. Dr. Pattabhi Sitaramayya, Governor of Madhya Pradesh, who presided, said the first reform that Rajaji effected was moderation in charging loans and issue of an ordinance to the effect that no cultivators' loan should carry interest at more than 6-1/4 per cent. That put an end to usury. But the clandestine method of extracting interest in advance came into operation. Mr. Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed said that Rajaji's sacrifice in the cause of the motherland was "unrivalled and unsurpassed."
