Steel prices to remain firm: Irani

Special Correspondent

Keen to enter the biotechnology space

BANGALORE: Global steel prices are expected to remain firm this year and touch around $500 a tonne, J. J. Irani, Director, Tata Sons, said here on Wednesday.

The next round of peak prices of steel would be witnessed only around 2008, he told reporters during an informal chat.

The current stable steel prices of around $350-400 a tonne were obtained after a peak price of $650-700 witnessed during late 2004 and early 2005. Mr. Irani said the Tatas were keenly looking to enter the biotechnology space.

The Tata-Sky joint venture will launch Direct to Home (DTH) operations between April and June this year.

The operations would initially be restricted to urban areas and depending on the response it would be extended to other centres.

The first operation would be started in Mumbai, he said.
