Not convincing

The observations in the article, "Expelling Members from Parliament" (Jan. 2) cannot be taken without a pinch of salt. Firstly, the legality of the expulsions was questioned by no less a person than legal luminary Ram Jethmalani. Secondly, according to the author's own references to the judgments of the Punjab and Haryana High Courts and the Supreme Court, the expulsion is legally flawed. Finally, the matter could have been referred to the Privileges Committee. There was no immediate urgency for the expulsion.

Bangalore

The swiftness with which the action was initiated against the 11 MPs is commendable. This has really restored Parliament's image. Its prestige will be further enhanced if the august body is rid of all tainted members.

B. Sripada Rajan,
Coimbatore

The expulsion is a clear signal that devious conduct by MPs will not be tolerated any longer.
