PONDICHERRY: Lt. Governor of Pondicherry M.M. Lakhera has appealed to yoga teachers to train diabetics in the discipline. Inaugurating the 13th annual International Yoga Festival, organised by the tourism department here on Wednesday, he said the high incidence of diabetes in the Union Territory was a matter of concern. Yoga could help diabetics keep the condition under control. Also, people with cardiac problems felt an improvement in their health after practising yoga. Mr. Lakhera said yoga would be accorded the status of a sport in Pondicherry, as requested by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA S.P. Sivakumar. It would then be entitled to all facilities provided to other sports and games. Earlier, Mr. Sivakumar said the status would enable young practitioners of the art gain admission to professional courses on the basis of their proficiency. Presiding over the function, Health Minister E. Valsaraj, said yoga and karate had their origin in India. But they spread to foreign countries and returned to their motherland and gained popularity among the people. The four-day event is being attended by some 500 delegates from within the country and abroad.
