COLOMBO: The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on Thursday warned of "dire consequences" if "repression by the armed forces on Tamil people" is continued. Condemning the recent killing of five Tamil youths in Trincomalee, the LTTE's political wing charged the Sri Lankan Government with resorting to "dastardly killings to suppress the liberation aspirations of students". "If the Sri Lankan majoritarian hardliners continue with the repression by the armed forces on the Tamil people, the situation will arise when they will have to face the dire consequences," said the LTTE's political wing in a statement the most direct and serious since the escalation of violence late last year. The LTTE's statement followed the recent killing of five Tamil youths in the eastern Trincomalee district. The Army had said the youths were "LTTE cadres" who were killed in an "accidental grenade explosion." Post-mortem reports revealed that they were killed due to gunshot injuries. At least four soldiers were injured in two separate attacks by suspected LTTE rebels in the Vavuniya and Trincomalee areas on Thursday, the Army said.
