Custodial death: report sought

HIGH COURTROUND-UP

Kochi: The Kerala High Court, on Thursday, directed the Government to file a report before January 16 on the status of investigation into the alleged custodial death of a youth at Fort Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram.

Justice K.R. Udayabhanu also directed the Home Secretary to take a decision, within a month, on a representation by Prabhavathi Amma, mother of the victim, Udayakumar, seeking a monthly allowance of Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000.

The court issued the directives on a writ petition filed by Ms. Prabhavathi Amma seeking a compensation of Rs. 25 lakhs.

SNC Lavalin case

A Bench, comprising Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice K.T. Sankaran, on Thursday, included Principal Accountant-General (Audit), Kerala, as additional respondent in a pending writ petition relating to the SNC Lavalin deal. The petition, filed by the Chief Editor of a periodical, had sought an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the award of a contract, for modernisation of Pallivasal, Sengulam and Panniyar hydroelectric projects and extension work on Kuttiyadi Irrigation Project, to the Canada-based SNC Lavalin.

GO quashed

Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair declared that M.A.H. Khan and V.K. Gireendran, who had retired from service, could continue as Syndicate members of Kannur University till the State Government nominated Principals of affiliated colleges in their place. The court made the declaration while quashing a Government Order (GO) invalidating their nominations.

Directive to KSEB

Justice Pius C. Kuriakose directed the Kerala State Electricity Board to report 200 vacant posts of electricity worker in Ernakulam district to the Kerala Public Service Commission at least by January 12. The court clarified that the commission need issue advice memos only after obtaining its permission.
