Temple priests: Krishna Iyer joins issue

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: The recent statements by some organisations promoting some particular communities on the issue of non-Brahmin priests for temple rituals have stirred up a hornets' nest. The former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer has joined the issue by releasing a statement titled `Have Hindu Gods Brahminical Exclusivism?'

He writes: ``Vivekananda was not a Brahmin. Mahatma Gandhi was a Bania. Narayana Guru was an Ezhava. Mata Amritanandamayi was depressed class by birth. Bhagwan Satyasai Baba, Shirdi Baba were not Brahmins. Sri Aurobindo of Divine Life was casteless! Was Buddha Brahmin? No! The founder of the National Congress was a Parsi. The great Ambedkar was not a Brahmin! Mannath Padmanabhan was a Nair. Why then should only Brahmins have access to gods and goddesses? Lord Krishna was a Yadava! Sri Rama was only a Kshatriya! Which pujari has `Brahma Jnana' whose professional moneymaking is through esoteric rituals? Read the Gitanjali and go to the streets to have a vision of Cosmic Creator!''
