KOZHIKODE: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate a convention here on Sunday to come up with a protest declaration on the alleged attempts being made disallow the law from taking its course in the Kozhikode ice-cream parlour sex racket case. Teesta Setalvad , lawyer and social activist, will deliver the keynote address. K.T. Mohammed playwright; Sukumar Azhikode, social critic; M.P. Veerendra Kumar, MP; and M.T. Vasudevan Nair, writer, among others, will participate. In a statement here on Thursday, members of an organising committee, set up to conduct the convention, said the declaration was being made as concerted attempts were being made to weaken the case. They alleged that this was evident from the way prosecution witnesses were being forced to retract their statements, as had happened during the trial of the Best Bakery case related to the Gujarat carnage. The committee said attempts were being made to save the culprits involved in the sex racket. It had become imperative for civil society to resist such manipulations and ensure that a fair trial was conducted and the guilty brought to book.
