`CPI(M) not inching closer to TDP'

Special Correspondent

  • Prakash Karat backs Raghavulu's charge on tenders
  • Party's stand clear on Polavaram
  • Rehabilitation of tribals is a must

HYDERABAD: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat has denied reports that the party is coming closer to the Telugu Desam, saying it should not be perceived that way just because two parties have somewhat similar views on certain issues.

He was responding to a question on the CPI(M) and the TDP making similar allegations of corruption in irrigation project tenders.

On party's State committee secretary B.V. Raghavulu's charge that Rs.1,000 crores has changed hands in finalisation of irrigation tenders, Mr. Karat said he could have based it on some solid grounds.

Asked to comment on TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu's offer to work with Left parties, he said the party was yet to give a thought to it. "Let us see. The State committee will discuss it and let us know."

Mr. Karat who addressed a press conference was here for the party's political education committee's extended meeting on Thursday.

On the Congress claim that Mr. Raghavulu's views on irrigation projects should not be taken seriously as it was the opinion of party's Central leadership that counted, he quipped: "Let them know that Mr. Raghavulu is also a Polit Bureau member."

On Polavaram project leading to displacement of tribals, he said the party had made its stand clear. The Government should take a close look at the alternatives. It was question of land and livelihood for tribals. "We want a rehabilitation and resettlement plan fully implemented before the commencement of the work on the project," he added.
