TIRUMALA: TTD security and vigilance sleuths on Thursday took TTD junior assistant Anjaneyulu into custody for unauthorisedly granting permission to a pilgrim party for the darshan of the Lord and seized a few blank letters of board members. Teacher arrested

ADILABAD: Mantini Shamsunder Rao (40), a teacher at ZP School, Mancherial, was arrested on Thursday on the charges of harassment, blackmail and attempt to molest a female colleague. Mancherial SI K. Mobile gang busted

ANANTAPUR: The I Town police on Thursday recovered cell phones worth Rs. 2.72 lakhs and Rs. 13,000 in cash from a gang of robbers who had stolen the valuables from a shop on Raju Road here last week. Five members of the gang — B. Karthik, M. Masthan, Vinod, Jagadish Kumar and Harikirshna Varaprasad — were arrested at the railway station here. - Staff Reporter

Tribal student dies

VIZIANAGARAM: Nimmaka Vasu (8), a third class student of Tadikonda tribal welfare residential school for boys died with symptoms of diarrhoea in his native village of Odrubangi in Tadikonda panchayat. Arika Kumari, a ninth class student in tribal welfare hostel for girls, died of fever on December 20. - Correspondent

Revenue target hiked

HYDERABAD: The revenue target for the Department of Stamps and Registration has been increased to Rs. 2,500 crores for 2006-07. This is Rs. 700 crores more than the target fixed for 2005-06. This detail was made available after Revenue Minister D. Prasada Rao held discussions with officials here on Thursday. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The NABARD has called for suggestions/observations/comments from stakeholders on the draft report of the task force led by A. Vaidyanathan set up to suggest an action plan for reviving cooperative credit institutions. KADAPA: A stone-cutter Jogi Salamma (45) was buried alive under heaps of mud that caved in near Eddulakonda in Muddanur mandal on Wednesday evening. Two other workers sustained injuries. - Staff Reporter

Honour for polytechnic

GULBARGA: Two students of Nutan Vidyalaya Society's Polytechnic have bagged the fourth and the ninth ranks in the State-level examination conducted by Karnataka State Technical Examination Directorate in 2005.

Principal of the polytechnic G.L. Shukla said in a press release that Santosh Rathod had bagged the fourth rank while Gayatri Sitnoor secured the ninth rank.

Ganja seized

DAVANGERE: The police arrested a person on Thursday on the charge of hoarding ganja in his house. They recovered 500 grams of ganja from him.

Based on definite clues, the police raided a house in Venkabavi colony and arrested Mohammed Rafique, who was allegedly selling ganja. — Staff Correspondent

Cinema raided

DAVANGERE: The police raided a mini-cinema where pornographic films were allegedly being shown.

They arrested Rafiq, the operator, and seized some cassettes.

They are searching for the owner of the cinema hall Vijayakumar, who is at large. — Staff Correspondent

Cash stolen

DAVANGERE: An employee of Harihar Polyfibres was relieved of Rs. 20,000 by an unknown person in Harihar on Wednesday.

The police said S.K. Brahmachari, who was drinking coffee, had kept the purse containing the money on the table.

A person at the next table came to him and dropped a Rs. 10 note.

When Mr. Brahmachari bent over to pick it up, the person ran away with the purse.

Cardiac check-up clinic

HASSAN: Vikram Hospital and Heart Care, Mysore, in association with the district unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), will conduct a cardiac check-up clinic on the first Friday of every month at the IMA building here.

The first check-up clinic will be inaugurated on Friday by IMA district unit president Nagaraj.

Facilities such as a Color Doppler and consultation by experienced cardiologists will be offered at affordable rates at the clinic. — Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The Belgaum district unit of Sampoorna Swachata Andolana has launched a campaign to create awareness on clean environment.

According to a release here on Thursday, street plays were staged in Yalihadagali, Yekkunchi, Adahalli and Adahatti during in the last two days.

Paper mill's gesture

Rajahmundry: As a part of community service and corporate social responsibility, the Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills (APPM) Limited has provided 10 sewing machines to Mallyyapeta Workers' Welfare Centre for imparting free vocational training in tailoring and embroidery to economically backward women on Thursday. Sri Shreeyash Bangur and Surbhi Bangur of APPM visited the tailoring centre along with L.N. Bangur, Chairman of the mill, and P.K. Suri, president (operations). Later they distributed 200 schoolbags to student of MPUP School in Venkatanagaram. - Special Correspondent

Two killed in accidents

Kakinada: Two persons were killed in separate road accidents that occurred in Kotha Vajrakutam village on the national highway under Gollaprolu police station limits on Thursday. In the first accident, a lorry on its way from Kattipudi to Prattipadu lost control and dashed against a road divider and rammed into a roadside thatched house crushing Pilla Subbarao (48), who was sleeping, in the early hours.

In the same village, a private sleeper coach bus on its way from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad knocked down Motukuru Nagamani (38) a farm worker while she was going to fields in the morning. - Correspondent

Fight AIDS, says Collector

ADDANKI: District Collector B. Udaya Lakshmi appealed to the people to unitedly launch all out attack on the dreaded AIDS disease.

Speaking at Madarametla near Addanki in Saint Vincent Hospital on Wednesday, Ms. Udaya Lakshmi said that free treatement has been arranged arranged for patients suffering from AIDS and this programme will last only 14 days. - Correspondent

ADDANKI: The State Scheduled Caste Finance Corporation Chairman R.D. Wilson has said that Rs. 1 crore will be sanctioned for setting up of industrial units with the co-operation of NSFDC. He said a special training centre will train dalits from rural areas.
