In North Chennai, a citizens initiative

Residents come together to draw up plan of action to improve amenities

CHENNAI: Residents of more than 10 localities in north Chennai have come together to draw up a plan of action to tackle civic problems.

Tired of the authorities' inability to cope with garbage disposal, management of solid waste, bad roads, poor traffic regulation and lack of maintenance of parks and grounds, a group of representatives met at Exnora International's office in T. Nagar on Tuesday to come up with a viable plan to make the industrial belt a better place to live.

The areas include Ayanavaram, Villivakkam, Broadway, Kodungaiyur, Vyasarpadi, Manali, Tondiarpet, Ennore, Korattur, Perambur and Tiruvottriyur. The Exnora representatives have taken up 12 focus areas where they believe low awareness among residents about the functioning of the civic body and lack of political will is the reason for most problems.

Residents want the Central and the State Governments to come together and use technology to complete the Perambur flyover and ease traffic congestion there.

In Villivakkam where the Villivakkam-Red Hills Road carries 20 lakh traffic vehicular units (20 times over the allowed limit), the proposed subway has not materialised.

This despite the Railway Board and the Chennai Corporation engineer who conducted the survey "agreing in principle." The State Government allotted Rs. 14 crore and the Railway Board provided Rs. 11 crore.

The project was slated for completion within nine months.

In Ayanavaram, because of traffic congestion, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation has withdrawn at least half a dozen route buses.
