Coimbatore: In an effort aimed at ensuring road discipline on arterial roads housing educational institutions, the City Police have decided to infuse life to the road safety patrol concept.
Teachers trained
The City Police Commissioner, Karan Singha, told reporters here that students were provided training through teachers on road rules and signs. The teachers underwent a training on Tuesday and Wednesday. They form part of the Road Safety Patrol (RSP) at educational institution level and their services would be requisitioned for regulating traffic near schools. They would function under the supervision of constables and head constables, said the Deputy Commissioner of Police, T. S. Anbu. Students would be assigned the task of stopping vehicles at pedestrian crossings near schools. They would also assist the police and parents in regulating parking of vehicles on school premises.
Road discipline
To supplement the ongoing efforts to bring in discipline on roads, traffic rule enforcement drive would be strengthened within a day or two. The City Police will get additional company of women personnel exclusively for the purpose of traffic management, he said.
To be deployed
They would be deployed on regulation and enforcement drives during peak hours. Ten Light Emitting Diode (LED) signal lights had been installed and work on 25 more had been taken up, he said.
