CHENNAI: An effort has been launched to ease congestion on the Poonamallee High Road at the Nelson Manickam Road junction. In association with a non-governmental organisation, Youth Task Force, the traffic police have put up barricades near the signal. Vehicles turning from Poonamallee High Road to Nelson Manickam Road wait behind the barricades, allowing those vehicles going towards Parrys Corner to move freely. Television artist S. Suresh, founder of Youth Task Force, said the system had been introduced on a trial basis. The barricades had been placed two days ago. Six police personnel and an equal number of volunteers from the NGO were regulating traffic at the junction. The day the system was launched, road users had responded positively. But the response had not been too good the following days, Mr. Suresh said. Traffic was being regulated at the point for two hours each in the morning and evening. Speeding was a major problem between Anna Arch and the Nelson Manickam Road junction, he said. Those interested can contact him at suresh@freshindian.org or at 55133133.
