CHENNAI: Teachers from the various educational boards will come together to create interactive science lessons for computers using the java technology in a project jointly organised by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and Sun Microsystems.

A press release issued by IIT, Madras said the lessons would be available as freeware on the Internet after peer review by other schools.

Science teachers of the schools -- The School in Adyar, Good Earth School in Sriperumbudur, Vanavani Matriculation Higher Secondary School in IIT campus, George Higher Secondary School in Mayiladuthurai, Velammal Matriculation Matriculation School on Ambattur-Red Hills Road and Sri Krishna Middle School in Tiruvarur -- will be trained to build interactive modules using software provided by Sun Microsystems. The science lessons will be targeted at students of classes VI to VIII.

The release said Sun Microsystems had donated the software and hardware for the project in an effort to integrate the lessons with its learning initiative, the Global Education Learning Community. U.S. space agency NASA, which already has online interactive programmes for students, has also reportedly expressed interest in participating in the science education programme.
