CHENNAI: On Thursday morning, the open ground along the railway track near the Meenambakkam airport saw a large number of boys and girls assemble. No, the young students were not there to participate in any sporting activity.

They were there to view an exhibition put up by various institutions and organisations falling under the Central Government.

Not surprisingly, the stalls of the armed forces were a big attraction. The youngsters found out from the military how it carried out its operations. Screening of short films was arranged.

    Products by SHGs

The stalls of the armed forces are only one aspect of the four-day exhibition, which commenced on Thursday. Several women self-help groups (SHGs), which are functioning with the support of various banks, have put up their stalls, exhibiting their products.

The National Highways Authority of India, the Shipping Corporation of India, the Postal and Income Tax departments are among the departments that have put up their stalls.

"As on date, there are 42 stalls. The number may go up to 50," says G. Jayalal, deputy director-general of the All India Radio and chief of the Inter-media Publicity and Coordination Committee of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, which has organised the multi-media campaign.

The objective is to take to people the message about numerous schemes and programmes of the Government. This is one way of ensuring implementation of the projects, Mr. Jayalal notes.

The exhibition is open to the public till Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
