Police feign ignorance on receipt of letter Special Surveillance team flown in from Chennai Visitors were checked and restricted Entry road to minister's house sealed
SALEM: A special "ring round" security, with two Special Force commandos armed with AK-47 rifles, has been provided to Social Welfare Minister Vijayalakshmi Palanichamy following the alleged receipt of an anonymous letter that threatened an "acid attack" on her. Though the local police feigned ignorance about any such letter that carried a threat to the Minister's life, they, however, accepted that a team of officials from the Special Surveillance unit , Chennai, had come to the city on Thursday to take over the security arrangements for the Minister. Door- frame metal detector had been erected at the minister's house at Subramaniam Nagar. The visitors were thoroughly checked and restricted. The entire stretch of the road in which her house was situated had also been sealed. Four wheelers were denied entry into the road, while two-wheeler riders and pedestrians were enquired and frisked. Police erected road-blocks at all the entry points of the locality where her house was situated. The Minister also was advised to cancel her engagements for two days. She, however, went to Bose Maidan on Thursday and reviewed the arrangements for the forthcoming farmers' function organised to thank the Chief Minister for her Farmers' Protection Scheme. Neither the Minister nor any of her family members could be contacted for any clarification in this regard.
