Coimbatore: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) police personnel on Wednesday night arrested the secretary of a housing society on graft charges. A. Arivazhagan, an LIC agent, approached P. Velusamy, secretary of the Coimbatore City Government Employees Housing Society in Gandhipuram to obtain a No-Objection Certificate from him to buy a house site there. He reportedly demanded Rs. 10,000 for issuing the certificate. As directed by the Vigilance sleuths, Mr. Arivazhagan approached him on Wednesday night with Rs. 1,000. While accepting it, he was arrested by a team of Vigilance officials led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, S. Girimurugan, and the Inspector, Karunakaran. A case under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act for demanding, accepting illegal gratification for the discharge of official duties, has been registered against Velusamy.
