Obstetrics, gynaecology congress begins today

Big turnout at pre-congress workshops

KOCHI: Live surgical demonstrations were the highlights of the pre-congress workshops held at three hospitals here on Thursday as part of the 49th All Indian Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which will open on Friday.

Nearly 6,000 delegates from across the country and abroad have arrived here to attend the workshop, the congress and the scientific sessions.

There are about 450 national faculties and 50 international faculties apart from more than 500 senior delegates, who will be chairing various sessions.

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences conducted two workshops on vaginal surgery and surgical gynaec oncology, while a workshop on endoscopic surgery was conducted at Sunrise Hospital and ultrasound workshop was held at Dr. Joy's Hospital.

A workshop on Critical Care in Obstetrics was held at Le Meridian too. The workshop involved use of mannequins for demonstration of basic life support in adult and newborn resuscitation. There were more than 500 doctors at each workshop.

According to chairperson of the Scientific Committee Sareena Gilbaz, the international faculty, who attended various workshops, were impressed by the simple techniques adopted by gynaecologists in the State to address various problems.

Young post-graduate students had presented some of the procedures and these were discussed on a one-to-one basis with foreign delegates, some of whom had evolved certain techniques.

Among the foreign faculty who presented some of the topics were Professor H.J. A. Carp, pioneer in immunology, Israel, who presented a session on Recurrent Pregnancy Loss. He gave tips about how to go about treatment in different situations.
