All police stations to be networked

Staff Reporter

Stations at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode in first phase

KOCHI: Before March, all police stations in the city will be networked. This step is being taken as part of the modernisation drive in the State police.

The modernisation drive, using funds from the Union Government, will be implemented at all police stations in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode in the first phase.

A decision to this regard had been taken at a meeting of police officers held at the Police Headquarters in December last.

"Office automation is being done now. Total computerisation will take some time. Nature of network to be used is being worked out," said Dinendra Kashyap, Superintendent of Police (Administration), Police Headquarters.

Crime detection

With the completion of networking, the crime detection and prevention could be made more efficient and quicker, said P. Vijayan, City Police Commissioner. Once the network is completed, sharing of crime and criminal information could be done speedily, he said.

As part of the computerisation drive, details of those featured in the goonda list and those listed as Dossier Criminals (DCs) and Known Depredators (KDs) will be made available in the network so that it could be accessed from all police stations.

Besides this, details of important places, organisations and institutions under each station will be available in the computer network.

Towards e-policing

The computerisation drive will help the force to make a big leap towards shifting to high-tech policing. Already the website of the City Police (www.kochicitypolice.org) has been evoking good response from the public, with many making use of the facility to register complaints online, said Mr. Vijayan. After the police stations are computerised, routine works like filing First Information Reports (FIRs), registration of complaints and issuing certificates could also be done electronically.

The public can also track the progress of investigation more effectively in this manner.

Existing facilities at police stations in the city will be evaluated soon and they will be readied for computerisation, as the networking should be completed in three months, said S. Surendran, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Detachment), who represented the City Police in the meeting held at Police Headquarters.

Three personnel from each station will be given training in handling computer and networking initially.
