NEW DELHI: Condemning the killing of 12 tribals in police firing at Kalinga Nagar in Orissa, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist)-New Democracy staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here on Thursday demanding arrest of the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police. The tribals were killed on January 2 during a demonstration against the construction of a boundary wall by Tata Steel, allegedly resulting in usurping of their land. "The Patnaik Government has shown that it will move decisively in favour of corporates and multi-national corporations against the interests, land rights and will of its people. Orissa has a large tribal population and at Kalinga Nagar, tribals have been protesting under Bisthapan Virodhi Manch against usurpation of their lands by the Government," CPI (M-L) Delhi Committee secretary Aparna said. A memorandum calling for cancellation of deals with corporate houses in Kalinga Nagar and restoration of land to the tribals was submitted to the Resident Commissioner of Orissa Bhawan here. Another NGO, Janhastakshep, demanded a probe by a sitting High Court Judge. Janhastakshep said it was unacceptable to have the Government follow a policy that enriched the industrial houses and MNCs at the cost of poor tribals.
