NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the East Delhi police for allegedly trying to extort money from a businessman at Pandav Nagar in East Delhi. The prime accused had worked for the victim for in the pasts.

The businessman had lodged a complaint with the Special Staff of the East Delhi police saying that he was receiving threatening calls from various places in Noida and Ghaziabad and that the caller had been demanding Rs. 25 lakhs. He had also received many threatening letters posted from Noida.

Following a month-long investigation, the police managed to track down the two accused, identified as Mohammad Attar Qureshi and Meher Chand, at Noida when they had come to collect the money from the businessman on Wednesday.

The police said Qureshi, who worked as a travel agent, had come to know that the businessman had sold property worth Rs. 50 lakhs after which he hatched the conspiracy. He roped in the son of his maid, Meher Chand, into the scheme. The duo would call up the businessman from various places in Ghaziabad and Noida to dodge the police.

Further investigations revealed that Qureshi, who claimed to have studied law and practiced in city court at Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, had come to Delhi about 20 years ago and happened to develop acquaintance with the victim. The businessman was running a restaurant in Connaught Place and Qureshi was one of his employees.

A couple of years ago, he started his own travel and courier firm.

The businessman too had closed his restaurant and had set up a factory. Meher agreed to join Qureshi for earning quick and easy money, the police said.
