This Day That Age
Leading Indian diplomat and former President of the UN General Assembly, Mrs. Vijayalakshmi Pandit, said in London on January 5 that the most important event of 1955 was the 29-nation conference of Asian and African countries held in April in Bandung. Replying to a question at a press conference she held for Indian journalists, Mrs. Pandit listed as the No. 2 event of 1955 the International Atoms for Peace Conference in Geneva in August under the presidentship of the Indian atomic scientist, Dr. Homi J. Bhabha. She said that the fact that an Indian was selected to preside over the conference was recognition of India's role in the development of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. The third place in the happenings of 1955 was allotted by Mrs. Pandit to the visit of the Russian leaders, Marshal Nikolai Bulganin and Mr. Nikita Khrushchev to India, Burma and Afghanistan. She attached considerable significance to the fact that this was the first time top Soviet leaders had left their country and travelled outside. Their visit to India, Burma and Afghanistan must undoubtedly have left considerable impact on them as on the world outside the Soviet Union, she added.
