This Day That Age
The year 1955 marked the peak period of film production activity in Madras. A record number of 101 pictures were produced in South Indian studios during the year, says a review of the progress of the South Indian motion picture industry, issued by the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce. Of the 101 pictures, 97 were actually censored. The other four having been produced in Sinhalese language were sent out to Ceylon. Of the 97 films, the number of pictures in Tamil and in Canarese also reached record figures. The number of Tamil pictures increased by seven compared to the previous year's output. There was a drop in the number of Telugu pictures by four. There are today 14 studios in the city, two each in Salem, Coimbatore and Mysore and one each in Trivandrum, Alleppey and Madurai. Nearly 88 per cent of the pictures were produced in Madras studios, the remaining 12 per cent being distributed among those in other centres in South India. The year 1955 was significant in that complete unity was achieved among the rank and file of the trade. The Film Federation of India emerged as the only body which could deliver the goods on behalf of the entire trade in India.
