Karaikal Carnival from January 14

The fete will showcase ethnic food festival at the beach from January 15

KARAIKAL: The tourism department of the Pondicherry Government and the Karaikal district administration in association with public-private sector agencies like ONGC, State Bank of India and the Karaikal Industries Forum, will conduct a four-day "Karaikal Carnival 2006", a festival of music, dance and culture here from January14 to 17.

Sudhir Kumar, Karaikal District Collector, said on Friday that the carnival would be inaugurated by he Pondy Chief Minister N.Rangasamy, on January14 at the Kamaraj Square, here.

The programme will commence with a folk dance, followed by a music concert by Dr.Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan and troupe, he said.

The carnival will also showcase ethnic food festival jointly put up in association with the Karaikal Chamber of Commerce at the Beach here on January15 and 16.

Catamaran race

A catamaran race in the Arasalar river has also been organised by the Fisheries department. There will be a light music programme by Mrs. Anuradha Sriram on January15.

The carnival will begin with a group run from Government House to the beach on January16 and there will be a dance by film actress Swarnamalya on January 17 at Kamarajar Square.

The Collector said that the carnival was intended to encourage tourist inflow to Karaikal district and also to contribute to the growth of the district that drew pilgrims to the famous Lord Saneeswara Bhagwan temple at Tirunallar.
