Phone tapping

Congress leader Ambika Soni's reaction to the phone-tapping charge is surprising. Does she mean to say that if one has no secrets to worry about, one should not bother if one's phone is tapped? One does not expect such a remark from a seasoned politician.

K.R.P. Gupta,
Mumbai

Scandal after scandal is unfolding with astonishing regularity. In the recent past, first came the Volcker Report's allegations followed by the cash-for-questions scam and the corruption in the MPLAD scheme. The latest is the phone-tapping issue. It is as if someone has meticulously scripted a play and is unveiling one episode after the other. Inevitably, in the din, everyone forgets about the welfare of the people.

M.J. Ruben,
Chennai

Such complaints are not new. The only new point in SP leader Amar Singh's case is the political colour given to it. Even so, it is a serious problem that requires a thorough investigation. Listening in on another person's conversation is an invasion of his or her privacy and needs to be avoided.

Nisha Gopalan,
Chennai

Phone tapping, except in matters of national security, is unconstitutional and should not be allowed. The UPA Government should order an independent inquiry into the matter and clear its name.

Sholavandan, T.N.
