Court order on school assistant posts

Hyderabad: A Division Bench of the High Court on Friday declared that teachers with single subject certification are not eligible for promotions to school assistant posts. The Bench was allowing a batch of writ petitions filed challenging the order of the Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal. - Legal Correspondent

Teachers lathicharged

CHITTOOR: Seven teachers were injured when the police lathicharged them when they were staging a dharna at the district educational office on Friday. They were urging the authorities to suspend DEO Ramalingam for committing malpractices in counselling of teachers and transfers. - Correspondent

Maoist killed

Sangareddy: One unidentified Maoist was killed and three others escaped in an encounter with the police in the forest area of Hastalpur in Medak district on Friday. The police found four kit bags, one tapancha, three bundles of gelatine sticks and a few detonators from the encounter site. - Staff Reporter

VSS chief beaten up

Sangareddy: Six persons suspected to be Maoists of Medak area committee beat up Tonta Durga Pathi (30), president of vana samrakshana samithi (VSS) in Suraram of Chinnasankarampet mandal late on Thursday night. Maoists thrashed him and left him with a warning not to cut trees in the forest. - Staff Reporter

Works distributed

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders distributing works relating to irrigation projects among five officials at Secretariat level. Principal Secretary C.V.S.K. Sarma will look after policy matters, inter-State issues, Godavari water and continue overall supervision of the projects. S.P. Tucker will handle 14 subjects, including groundwater and minor irrigation. Satish Chandra, Secretary, has been given a number of projects under execution now while B. Rajasekhar, Additional Secretary, has been asked to handle 13 projects like Vamsadhara and Janjhavathi and Harish Kumar, Commissioner, Krishna Basin, will handle 12 Krishna-based projects. - Special Correspondent

BJP meet postponed

HYDERABAD: The State executive meeting of the BJP to be held here on January 19 and 20 has been postponed, according to official spokesman K. Laxman. He said in a press release here on Friday that the postponement was due to the convening of the national executive meeting on January 20. - Special Correspondent

Farm worker ends life

Kakinada: A farm worker Rayudu Rambabu (25) allegedly committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at his house in Patavala village on Friday. He took the extreme step due to strained relationship with his wife, it is said. - Correspondent

Huge ganja haul

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Narsipatnam police seized ganja worth Rs.64 lakhs being transported by a lorry and arrested a man and his two sons. Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted a lorry on Thursday night and found that 1,293 kg of ganja was being carried from Janabai in Orissa to Madhya Pradesh. - Staff Reporter

5 hostel employees face action

CHITTOOR : Social Welfare Minister Redya Naik on Friday asked District Collector S.S. Rawath to take action against five employees working in ST hostels for different reasons.

While reviewing functioning of ST hostels in Chittoor, Madanapalle and Punganoor, the Minister found less pass percentage in the 10th class examination last year. - Correspondent

TTD sets up info cell

TIRUPATI : The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has set up a separate cell for proper implementation of the Right to Information Act and furnish relevant information sought by the public.

Medical camp held for drivers

Nellore : The Transport Department has conducted a medical check-up for drivers on Friday, as part of the Road Safety Week celebrations.

A team of doctors from various hospitals examined around 150 drivers and provided medicines. A blood donation camp was also held. -Staff Reporter

Municipal worker found dead

KADAPA : Kondaiah, a sweeper of Kadapa Municipal Corporation was found dead near Krishna circle on Friday.

TIRUMALA : Tripathi, who is on a cycle tour from Bangalore to New Delhi reached Tirumala on Thursday.

Arrack sachets seized

ANANTAPUR : The excise police of Kadiri sub-division arrested one person and seized 2,000 sachets of arrack being smuggled to Kadiri from Bangalore in an RTC bus on Friday.

Transco raids

Nellore: Transco officials, who have conducted raids in different parts of Nellore division, registered cases against 38 persons for alleged power theft.

Body found

ANANTAPUR : A person, identified as Narayanaswamy of Kadiri town, was found murdered near Purvapalli village in Kadiri rural mandal on Friday.

An employee of a borewell firm, he left his home on December 31 afternoon along with his friends. He was strangulated to death, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

Doctor's gesture

WARANGAL : Lakkireddy Hanimi Reddy, cardiologist, California, has come forward to contribute his mite for development of Kakatiya University. He announced a donation of Rs. 1 crore in the presence of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah in Hyderabad on Friday.

A former student of Kakatiya Medical College, Dr. Reddy donated the amount for construction of an auditorium.

Philatelic society

KARIMNAGAR : The Karimnagar Philatelic and Hobbies Society was formed in the town to inculcate good habits among students and elders on the occasion of Karimnagar philatelic exhibition (KARPEX-2006) on January 7 and 8. The society has elected the following office-bearers: Dwaram Nagabushanam (president), E. Rajeshwara Rao (secretary), Ravikanti Murali (vice-president), K. Anna Reddy (joint secretary), V. Ramesham (treasurer), M. Laxma Reddy and K. Bapi Raju (executive committee members).

ADILABAD : The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the Government degree college, Nirmal, on Friday organised an awareness rally on AIDS as part of its 10-day special winter camp being held at Gajulapet slum on the outskirts of Nirmal.

PF adalat on January 10

KARIMNAGAR : PF adalat will be held on January 10 at the office of the assistant provident fund commissioner at Jyothinagar in Karimnagar town. Traders warned against adulteration

Addanki: District Food Inspector A. Viswanatha Reddy has said that drastic action will be taken against traders indulging in adulteration of items.

He was speaking at the Junior College complex in Darsi in connection with an awareness camp for students on Weights and Adulterated Trade items on Thursday. He said violators could be prosecuted, fined and even jailed for adulteration. District civil supplies officer P. K. Prabhakar said that customers must be careful in purchasing essential commodities. - Correspondent

Rangoli contest winners

Kakinada: Renuka, Jyothi Swaroopa and Lakshmi Prasanna were adjudged as the first, second and third prize winners in the Rangoli contest organised under the auspices of `Lions club Vision' at the Sumedha Vidya Mandir, according to T.C. Devaki Devi, Club President.

In the boy's category Kartik, Sanjiv Kumar and Abhishek bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively.

Rajahmundry: The Rajahmundry Press Club team won the cricket match over World Vision, NGO on Friday in a limited over match held in Arts College ground.

Press Club team hit 128 in limited 20 overs, where as the World Vision team was all out for 106. Prakash hit 39 runs and Bhanu took three wickets in Press Club side. Special Correspondent

Rajahmundry: The Swarnandhra Cultural Association is going to organise blood donation camps, tricycles to physically challenged people and other social activities on the eve of its eighth anniversary.
