London : The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced that one of cricket's most respected figures, David Shepherd, who retired as an umpire last season, has been awarded Honorary Life membership of MCC. In a press release on Friday, MCC said the move recognises David Shepherd's immense contribution to cricket, first as a player with Gloucestershire and, more recently, as an umpire, who stood in 92 Tests and 172 One-Day Internationals including three successive World Cup finals, in 1996, 1999 (at Lord's) and 2003. Upon hearing the news, David Shepherd said, "I am honoured and delighted to have been give lifetime membership of MCC. It has capped a truly memorable year for me."Other honorary life members of MCC include Sir Garfield Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, Ian Botham, Henry Olonga and Dickie Bird.
