DAVANGERE: The Civil Engineering Department of the Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET) has been assigned the job of evaluating flood relief work taken up by different departments and agencies in the last few months. Arrears of bills for completed works will be paid only after a "satisfactory report" is given by the college, according to official sources here. The Government wants to execute flood relief works effectively and ensure that funds released for these works are not misused. It had decided to make use of the services of local engineering colleges in flood-affected districts to evaluate the quality of work and withhold over 30 per cent of the total amount until the colleges give their report. The Government received complaints about use of inferior quality materials in various parts of the State. It has taken this step to ensure that people who suffered in the recent floods are compensated properly and roads and bridges that have been damaged are reconstructed using quality materials. The Government will give one per cent of the cost of the work to the colleges that evaluate it as their fee. BIET is evaluating work with the help of 12 faculty members including the Head of Department of Civil Engineering. The institute is expected to submit its report by the end of this month. The district administration has already released 80 per cent of the amount of the works at the instance of the Government and will release the remaining 20 per cent when the engineering college certifies the quality of the work. The college will highlight any defect in the works in a report to be submitted to the district administration. The agency which has carried out the work will be asked to set right the anomaly to claim for the remaining amount. The Land Army and the Engineering wing of the zilla panchayat have carried out road repair works while the Minor Irrigation Department has carried out repair works of tanks damaged during the floods. The Watershed Development Department has repaired the check dams. An amount of Rs.1.70 crores had been allotted for Davangere city, Rs. 94.57 lakhs for Davangere rural, Rs.1.20 crores for Harihar taluk, Rs. 1 crore for Honnali taluk, Rs. 83.80 lakhs for Chennagiri, Rs. 95.70 lakhs for Harpnahalli and Rs. 48.28 lakhs for Jagalur.
