Project to grow medicinal plants soon: Sujanapal

Special Correspondent

He says the project will make use of knowledge of tribal people

WARM GREETING: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala presenting a `ponnada' to Forest Minister A. Sujanapal at a reception accorded to the latter at the DCC office in Kozhikode on Friday.

KOZHIKODE : Forest Minister A. Sujanapal has that projects will be drawn up to establish medicinal plantations at Peruvannamuzhy (in Kozhiode), Wayanad and Palakkad making use of the knowledge of tribal people.

Speaking at a meeting of officials of Forest Department in Kozhikode on Friday, the Minister emphasised the need to refurbish the image of the department. The medicinal plantation project was aimed at exploiting its export potential. He also intended to tone up the vigilance wing of the department and to strengthen wildlife protection measures.

Mr. Sujanapal also felt in the afforestation programmes preference should be given to fruit bearing and other trees useful to people rather than trees like acacia and eucalyptus that had been extensively planted.

He told the officials that steps had to be taken to prevent destruction of standing crops by elephants. Such incidents had been reported by farmers at Nadapuram. He would be convening a meeting to discuss this issue shortly.

Chief Conservator of Forests L. Lakhvinder Singh and Conservator D.K. Varma, were among the officials present at the meeting.

Mr. Sujanapal held discussions with officials of Pollution Control Board and Backward Classes Development Corporation of which also he is the Minister. Mr. Sunajapal, who was on his first visit to Kozhikode after becoming a Minister, was accorded a reception by Congress workers at the DCC office on Friday.
