HYDERABAD: A day ahead of the inaugural of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, the ball was set rolling when an MoU was signed between Apache Footwear, authorised manufacturer of Adidas brand, and the State Government for a Rs. 500-crore manufacturing plant at Nellore. Over a period of four years, when the unit will be fully established, the original equipment manufacturer of Adidas range of footwear, clothing and sports apparel is expected to provide employment to some 30,000 persons, said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy before the MoU was signed. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Oscar Fernandes, Dr. Reddy, Major Industries Minister J. Geeta Reddy and Principal Secretary, Industries D. Lakshmi Parthasarathy were present. The Apache Footwear delegation comprising General Manager Steve Chen and six senior executives was led by chairman Johnson Tsai. The estimated production envisaged is over a million pairs of shoe a month and provided time schedules are kept in clearances and project execution.
Sector-specific SEZ
The company expects to double production capacity and headcount. Once selected, supervisors and management level employees would be sent to China for training, it was said. Dr. Reddy said the project would be developed as a sector-specific Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for footwear with all infrastructure facilities, with the Government extending all benefits eligible for SEZs.
