KOZHIKODE : The 30th Calicut Flower Show 2006 organised by the Calicut Agri-Horticultural Society opened at Swapna Nagari ground here on Friday, showcasing new and rare hybrid flower and vegetable varieties. Forest Minister A. Sujanapal inaugurated the show, which will be on till January 11. Calicut Agri-Horticultural Society convener Thottathil Ravindran; vice-presidents K.R. Sreedhar and R. Sasikumar and secretary James Jacob Kynadi among others participated in the deliberations. The show this year is noted for showcasing rare flowers such as ufobia, adina, and the like. There are also colourful collections of gerbera, salvia, marigold, begonia and ferns to name a few. A special stall this year is that of the Madikere-based Rockwood Anthuriums of T.V. Gopinath, showcasing rare anthurium varieties such as safari, pistash and the miniature pigtail. Stalls have been put up by the Kozhikode District Floriculture and Medicinal Plants Cooperative Society, the Malabar Botanical Garden, Indian Institute of Spices Research, Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, District Agricultural Farm, Koothali and Ooty Botanical Garden. A number of trophies, including the K.E. Madhavi Memorial trophy, sponsored by institutions and individuals will be presented to the winners of various contests.
