Water recharge structures made mandatory

Decision would help conserve water and raise the ground water level in Rajasthan

JAIPUR: In a significant step, the Rajasthan Government on Saturday made it mandatory to put up water recharge structures in all buildings constructed at the land plots measuring 300 square metres and more. The urban local bodies will have the right to cancel the permission for construction in the absence of water recharge structure in the proposed building map. The Minister of State for Urban Development, Pratap Singh Singhvi, said here that the decision would help conserve water and raise the ground water level. All the municipal bodies across the State have been instructed to ensure compliance with the new norms.

Mr. Singhvi said the premises where water recharge structures were earlier not erected would have the option of constructing them now as part of the scheme for public-private partnership. The State Government had earlier fixed the land size at 500 sq. metres while requiring the construction of recharge mechanism.

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation and Jaipur Development Authority have also decided to jointly start a campaign and motivate people to construct rain water harvesting structures in their houses.

The famous Chennai model will be demonstrated at public places to apprise the people of its shape and size.
