`Govt. has spent Rs.497 cr. for renovation of 270 hospitals'

Nagercoil : The Government has been implementing various welfare and development activities in the field of health for providing best treatment to the poor and downtrodden on a par with the rich people in the State, according to the Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram.

Inaugurating a new panchayat union building at Kurunthencode, constructed at a total cost of Rs.33 lakhs, on Saturday, he said the Government had spent Rs.497 crores for the renovation of 270 government headquarter and taluk hospitals throughout the State.

The Government recently conducted a survey in connection with prevailing peculiar diseases in districts so as to open special unit, so that the affected people would get proper treatment, the Minister said.

Moreover, all government medical colleges had already been equipped with modern medical gadgets to identify breast and uterus cancer for women in order to facilitate them to get treatment, he said.

A sum of Rs.5 crores had been spent on upgrading the regional cancer centre at Kancheepuram, he said.

The MP, A.V. Bellarmine, made an appeal to the Health Minister to set up a unit of Regional Cancer Centre at the Kanyakumari Medical College Hospital so that a large number of women who were affected with cancer need not go to Thiruvananthapuram for treatment.

The Collector, Sunil Paliwal, said that Rs.2 crores had been spent on executing development works in the Kurunthencode panchayat union during 2004-05.

Similarly, the Government had allotted Rs.3 crores for the implementation of development as well as welfare activities during 2005-06.

Later, Mr. Thalavai Sundaram inaugurated a newly constructed children's park and development works at Thirparappu Falls.
