The alliance will continue, says Narayanasamy

S. Nadarajan

`The new assignment is an opportunity for me'

Pondicherry: The Congress MP and new general secretary of the All India Congress Committee, V. Narayanasamy, said on Saturday that he would ensure that the alliance now in place among the Congress, the DMK, the Pattali Makkal Katchi and other parties was kept intact to contest the forthcoming Assembly polls here.

He told The Hindu over phone that the new assignment given by the high command was an opportunity for him to see that the Congress was strengthened in the States (Madhya Pradesh and Orissa) he had been put in charge of.

A pleasant surprise

The appointment of Mr. Narayanasamy as one of the general secretaries and one of the new faces in the highest policy and decision-making body was a pleasant surprise to the rank and file in Pondicherry. It was only in August last year was he replaced by the former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, P. Shanmugham, to pilot the party here. The replacement was a direct sequel then to the sustained protest made by some of the legislators of the party and also a section of the rank and file of the party who sought reshuffling of the party functionaries here.

None virtually anticipated that Mr. Narayanasamy would rise to the virtually peak post and this is the first time that a party functionary from Pondicherry had been appointed to the post of general secretary of the AICC.

Special invitee

Another unprecedented development is the appointment of former Chief Minister of Pondicherry V. Vaithilingam as one of the special invitees to the CWC. Mr. Vaithilingam was pleasantly surprised to get a fax message about his appointment as one of the 13 invitees.
