KOZHIKODE: Participants of the three-day UGC national workshop on ``Film and Media Studies'' conducted by the Department of English, University of Calicut, got an opportunity to familiarise with the growth and present trends in this field of study. P. Chandramohan, Vice-Chancellor, Kannur University, inaugurated the workshop. Syed Iqbal Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor, University of Calicut, presided over the inaugural session. Prof. Hasnain also released the departmental journal `Interventions' commemorating the late R.Vishwanathan. Film and media studies are now part of the M.A. syllabus. U. Babu Gopalakrishnan, vice-chairman, Kerala Chalachitra Academy, presented a paper on various theories from literature and social anthropology in relation to film studies. I. Shanmughadas, film critic, dwelt on major film theories up to 1960. Syed Amjed Ahmed presented a paper on `The World of Cinema' which explored the major trends in world and Indian cinema. A session on `Cinema and Society' by T. Muraleedharan touched upon the post 1960 developments in film studies.
