Australian Open wild card for Philippoussis
Melbourne:
Former U.S. Open and Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis has been granted a wild card entry to the Australian Open, starting from January 16 at Melbourne Park.
Philippoussis, 29, is attempting a comeback after a disappointing 2005, when he won only 10 singles matches on tour and finished outside the top 100 in the ATP rankings for the second consecutive season.
He reached the second round of the Adelaide International this week, losing in three sets to second-seeded Dominik Hrbaty.
Three other Australians were granted wild cards, organisers announced on Friday. Peter Luczak was given a place in the men's draw, while Nicole Pratt and Sophie Ferguson were given places in the women's draw. AP
