Explosives seizure: sub-agent held

Kozhikode : The city police on Saturday arrested an explosive sub-agent Adbul Kareem (55), hailing from Arecode in Malappuram district, in connection with the case of the seizure of gelignite sticks at the cloakroom of the bus station of the Kerala State Road Transport on the Mavoor Road here a week ago.

The accused has been charged with Section 3 (causing explosion likely to endanger life and property) and Section 4 (attempt to cause explosion or for making or keeping explosives with intend to endanger life or property) of the Explosives Substances Act. He was produced before a court remanded him to judicial custody till January 20.

Kozhikode City Police Commissioner H. Venkatesh told presspersons that Abdul Kareem had purchased the gelignite sticks from an explosive dealer at Kodungallur in March 2001. He had the licence then to purchase and stock explosives. But his licence had been temporarily suspended following complaints from the public in 2002. The then Controller of Explosives had also asked him to defuse the explosives. It is learnt that Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kozhikode City Special Branch) V. Divakaran has issued memos to two police personnel for destroying the newspaper in which the seized gelignite sticks had been wrapped and kept in the carton of the cloakroom.
