Job generation programme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has started preparations for implementation of the National Rural Employment Generation Programme in Palakkad and Wayanad districts, Minister for Rural Development C.F. Thomas has said. Principal Secretary (Rural Development) Ram Singh attended the national review meeting on the Programme held in New Delhi on Thursday and Friday in connection with preparatory work for implementation of the programme. Talking to presspersons here on Saturday, the Minister said that action would be taken for the implementation of the programme in the two districts as first phase, in accordance with the decisions taken in New Delhi. — Special Correspondent

Ration shops to observe hartal

KOCHI: Ration shops will observe hartal on January 16 in protest against the move to destroy the rationing system by reducing the allotment of rice and wheat.

The Federation of Ration Dealers, the common platform of All Kerala Retail Ration Dealers Association and Kerala State Retain Association, will observe January 16 as a `Black Day' and stage protest rallies and dharnas in front of Central Government offices, said K.V. Thomas MLA, chairman of the federation. Convener K.R. Dayananda Babu was also present at the press conference. — Staff Reporter

Re-elected

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State committee of the Kerala Youth Front (M) unanimously re-elected Jose K. Mani as its president at its meeting in Kottayam on Saturday. The meeting also elected a 25-member State secretariat and 51-member executive committee. The elections were held under the supervision of Kerala Congress(M) general secretary Joy Abraham and general secretary and State returning officer P.T. Jose. — Special Correspondent

Spirit seized

Kasaragod : The Excise Department officials on Saturday seized 630 litres of spirit from a van near the check post at Manjeswaram. The spirit, smuggled from Karnataka, was filled in 21 plastic cans having 30-litre capacity each. It was seized after the driver failed to stop at the check post and fled along with the co-passenger after taking the vehicle to a vantage point. — PTI

Infam leaders' plea

THRISSUR: The Indian Farmers' Movement (Infam) leaders have demanded the constitution of an expert committee to study all aspects of the working of a controversial pig breeding farm at Kainur, near here, before taking a decision to shift or close it down. In a memorandum to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Infam national trustee M.C. George said the Kainoor pig-breeding farm was a unique institution of excellence in this field. — Staff Reporter

Award for priest

THRISSUR: Francis Alappatt, Director of Jubilee Mission Medical College here, has been selected for C.M. George Memorial Outstanding Achievement Award, 2005, instituted by the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi Youth Wing. At a press conference here on Friday, the samithi's office-bearers said the award would be presented to Fr. Alappatt at a function here on Tuesday next. KOZHIKODE: Technology Business Incubator (TBI) of National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) will conduct a walk-in interview for the post of a secretarial assistant on contract basis for TBI at 9 a.m. on January 12.
