Late payment deadline extended

NEW DELHI: Power distribution companies BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna and NDPL have extended their Late Payment Surcharge Waiver Scheme (LPSC) for arrears of electricity dues till February 6. The extension will help those who had missed the January 6 deadline.

Under the scheme, started on December 7, 2005, consumers were to get a 100 per cent waiver on payment of full principal amount of outstanding electricity dues and the payment was acceptable both in cash and by demand drafts or pay orders. In cases where the arrears were in excess of Rs.50,000, consumers were allowed to request the power distributors to accept the payment in two equal monthly instalments for the incremental amount and no interest was to be levied on instalments.

Protest rally on Monday

NEW DELHI: The National Federation of the Blind will hold a rally in the Capital on January 9 to press its long-pending demands. The rally is expected to be attended by members of the Federation from all States.

The demands include filling up the backlog of the vacancies within three months by undertaking a special recruitment driveand introduction of the amendment bill in the coming session of Parliament.

Process of development

NEW DELHI: Union Petroleum and Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar has said that Panchayati Raj and de-centralisation of the participatory process of development are the key to attainment of full employment in the country.

Releasing a book titled "Development with Dignity: A Case for Full Employment", Mr. Aiyar said merely because an economy becomes a part of the global economy it may not lead it to respond to the requirements of society. Published by the National Book Trust India, the book has been authored by noted economist Amit Bhaduri.

Teleconference

NEW DELHI: To strengthen its student support services, Indira Gandhi National Open University will hold a nationwide teleconference session at its 32 regional centres on Sunday.

The teleconference, to be held at the Electronic Media Production Centre of the IGNOU here, will be addressed by the Vice-Chancellor, followed by presentations of regional centres

Decision on Ordinance criticised

NEW DELHI: The All-India Confederation of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes has criticised the United Progressive Alliance Government's decision to give clearance for promulgating an Ordinance to amend the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Act, 2004.
