Protest against firing on Orissa tribals

Staff Reporter

Demand to end police interference

NEW DELHI: Socialist Unity Centre of India activists held a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here on Saturday to protest against the police firing on tribals at Kalinga Nagar in Orissa this past Monday.

They demanded that the Central Government declare a policy to end police interference in legitimate democratic mass movements.

The SUCI also demanded that the land of the poor should not be acquired without giving them due compensation at the current market price along with alternative housing and proper economic rehabilitation.

Speakers accused the Tata Company of acquiring land for the steel plant in lieu of a meagre amount given to the villagers. They said the firing incident was reminiscent of the police brutality inflicted on Honda workers in Gurgaon last year.

It was no secret that the police was being used to curtail all legitimate democratic movements of people to protect the interest of the capitalists, they added.

Punishment.

Apart from demanding that the police be banned from opening fire at legitimate gatherings, the SUCI also demanded that police personnel responsible for firing at Kalinga Nagar should be handed out exemplary punishment.
