`Swarna' reference raises eyebrows

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A reference to `Swarnandhra Pradesh' by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Burugula Ramakrishna Rao Girls High School here on Saturday evening raised a few eyebrows.

Dr. Singh said the outcome of the efforts made for the past 50 years so far was that the State had become "Swarnandhra Pradesh." This was a slogan coined by N. Chandrababu Naidu of Telugu Desam during his tenure as Chief Minister in contrast to "Haritandhra Pradesh", the goal set by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The Prime Minister told the gathering, "Your State should feel proud to be home to the institutions like this high school which helped build "Swarnandhra Pradesh".

Being present in an educational institution, Dr Singh became nostalgic of his days as teacher and said "as you know, I chose to be a teacher and enjoyed being a teacher. "Even today, I see myself still as a teacher, but in a slightly bigger classroom!"
