MCD demolishes 24 illegal properties

New Delhi: Continuing with its Court-ordered action against unauthorised constructions, MCD on Saturday targeted 24 illegal structures, both commercial and residential, in 11 zones of the Capital.

Demolition squads of the civic body took action against 23 commercial and one residential properties across the Capital, taking the total number of structures against which action had been taken so far to cross 650.

The Corporation demolished, either partly or fully, 20 commercial constructions besides sealing 3 commercial and two residential properties in all the zones barring Civil Lines.

Six illegal properties were targeted in Shahdara South zone, while three each in City and Sadar Paharganj zones and two each in Narela, Rohini, Shahdara North and West zones.

Action was taken against one property each in Central, Karol Bagh, Najafgarh and South zones.

G.L. Sanghi dead

NEW DELHI: Law-Asia Institute president and senior Supreme Court advocate G. L. Sanghi passed away on Friday. He was 75.

Mr. Sanghi was on his way back from the United States to Delhi by a Lufthansa flight when he suffered a heart attack and died on board.

With over 50 years of active practice in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court, Mr. Sanghi was known for his sober nature. He was founder trustee and senior vice-chairman of the Heart Care Foundation of India.

His body will be brought to Delhi on Sunday night. Cremation will take place at Nigambodh Ghat at 4 p.m. on Monday, January 9.

25 child labourers rescued in South Delhi

New Delhi: Fifty-five child labourers have been rescued from embroidery units in South Delhi area by social workers.

The children belonging to Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh were working in the units in Mamraj Mohalla and Shera Mohalla in East of Kailash and were rescued by activists of `Bonded Liberation Front' on Friday.

The children are now lodged at the Ashraya Kendra in the Capital.

International puppet festival from Jan. 13

New Delhi : A seven-day international puppet festival will be held in the capital from January 13.

The festival, produced by Teamwork Productions, focused on new contemporary work from India and abroad and was seen as an established platform to further multi-media arts in the country, a statement said on Saturday.

The festival would be hosted at multi locations in the city.

The shows would range from traditional rod and string puppets to visual stories and epics.

Self-immolation at Patiala House

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man died after he set himself afire at Patiala House Courts in New Delhi on Saturday.

According to the police, Suraj Prakash, a resident of Inderpuri in South-West Delhi, came to Patiala House Courts at around 4 p.m. and tried to immolate himself. The public and the police managed to douse the fire but not before he sustained severe burn injuries. The police took him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he died.

The Tilak Marg police are investigating the incident.
