The works of up-and-coming artists T.R. Sunil Lal, Piyali Ghosh and Rupal Dave exhibited at the Lalithakala Akademi art gallery in Kozhikode were varied, yet similar in a way. There was a dominant leitmotif evident in all the frames that of commitment to a cause. Says the Wayanad-based artist Sunil: "In the process of image making, I always engage myself in personal dialogue with the self. The art, which is an outcome of this, often seems to be an expression of personal experiences." Piyali Ghosh from Kolkata adds: "I love to work on an imaginary world and negate the discriminations in society through my art." For Rupal from Ahmedabad, her acrylics mirrored the wounded psyche of women. Rupal and Piyali are final-year students in painting at the M.S. University, Baroda. Rupal's blue-dominated acrylics are women-centric. They depict sensuality, sexuality and intimacy and which in turn mirror the wounded psyche of the woman. The `Dream' series of watercolours by Piyali portray the inherent hope of the artist that works of art can negate the discriminations in society suffered by the underprivileged, especially women. Sunil Lal's etchings showcase bisexuality, which he thinks is a relevant subject in the contemporary scene. His depictions draw upon the concept of ardha nareeswara from the Hindu myths, a notion accepted by modern science as well, he explains. All the three artists have participated in group shows earlier. This is the first time they are showcasing their works in Kerala.
