dated January 9, 1956: Day of records

It was a busy day for records at the Corporation Stadium in Madras on the second day of the fifth and final Test between India and New Zealand on January 7. The most notable performance was the first wicket stand of Mankad and Roy, worth 413, the highest for that wicket in Test cricket; Hutton and Washbrook made 359 for England against South Africa at Johannesburg in 1948-49; until then the stand of Hobbs and Rhodes, of 323 for England against Australia at Melbourne in 1911-12, had remained a record. The next outstanding event was Mankad's score of 231, the highest individual innings for India. Also India's score of 537 for three at stumps surpassed their previous best of 531 for seven made in New Delhi in the present series. As many as 303 runs were scored in a day, a feat never before achieved by Indian batsmen.
