This Day That Age
Dr. B.V. Keskar, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, said in Bombay on January 7 that the work of spreading music should go on in the direction of creating discerning and intelligent listeners in the country. "It is true we have a number of listeners, but what is really wanted is good and real listeners. If the country has that type of listeners, I am sure the golden era in Indian music will come soon." Inaugurating the 12-day music and drama festival of Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha at a specially erected pandal at Matunga, he said lovers of Hindustani music should learn something from the way Carnatic concerts were organised. "Yesterday, I had the occasion to inaugurate the festival of Hindustani music and dance, and I repeat here what I said there, very strongly. The great qualities of Carnatic music are the coordination and synthesis in their concerts. This is something which contributes to its musical qualities. I feel it is something which should be and would have to be complied with by those of us in the North if we want music in the North to progress as much as it has done in the South. There is no doubt that both of them are the same. They come from the same source. Great musicians have been produced both in the North and the South. North Indian music has also reached a great height. But, unfortunately, its proper manifestation in the North is a little confused and chaotic. If harmony comes and if some standard is laid down, I am quite sure it can give a very good account of itself."
