DINDIGUL: Involvement of local bodies and participation of people are essential to identify projects for creating infrastructure and implementing various employment generation activities under job assurance scheme, said Collector S. Murugaia. He was inaugurating a special camp on Job Assurance Scheme meant for representatives of local bodies held at Gandhigram Rural Institute on Saturday. Main objective of the scheme was to create infrastructure and provide a minimum of 100 days of employment to people living in rural areas. The scheme would be implemented in all 306 village panchayats and 24 special panchayats. All persons aged 18 years and above are eligible. Jobs would be created within five-km radius in and around the village. If the job opportunities were created beyond five-km radius, 10 per cent extra wages would be given. Mr. Murugaia said local bodies have the power to prioritise the work on the basis of requirement of villages. Development works would be designed on the basis of plans given by panchayats. Top priority would be given to land and water conservation works and laying of link roads. A minimum 50 workers is necessary to start a project. Each worker would get Rs.80 per day. Wages would be disbursed through banks or post offices. Free medical assistance would be given to injured worker on duty. Panchayat presidents could contact the block development officers for implementation of various projects under this scheme, he added.
