KANNUR: The Anti-Death Sentence Samiti has lauded Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan's demand to adopt a resolution against capital punishment in the next Assembly session. He had sent a letter to the Assembly Speaker in this regard. Samiti convener K. Girishkumar, in a press release here on Sunday, said Mr. Achuthanandan's gesture would impart strength to the democratic and progressive traditions of the State. It was the first ever instance where a Leaders of the Opposition had officially demanded a resolution in the Assembly demanding termination of capital punishment, he said. The Leader of the Opposition sent a copy of the letter to the samiti, which stated that terminating capital punishment from the Indian penal system when death sentence was treated worldwide as savage would serve to strengthen the democratic system of the country. The samiti had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Mr. Achuthanandan demanding, among other things, adoption of a resolution in the Assembly seeking termination of death sentence and release of deserving prisoners undergoing life term. The memorandum had been signed by such personalities as Adoor Gopalakrishnan, S. Balaraman and M.K. Sanu. The samiti urged the Opposition to present a resolution if the Government was not prepared to do it.
