Yasir Hameed doubtful for first Test

Lahore: Pakistan opener Yasir Hameed may not play in the first Test against India after being diagnosed with typhoid and all-rounder Shoaib Malik is likely to replace him as Salman Butt's opening partner.

"He has been diagnosed as suffering from severe typhoid and I am not sure if he will be able to recover in time for the first Test. We have spoken to him and he is still under treatment in Peshawar," Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq told The News on Saturday.

Shoaib Malik, who opened in the series against England, might retain the slot as the team does not have many options.

"Their choices are limited and eventually Malik might again be given this responsibility as things stand," the newspaper quoted a source in the Pakistani team as saying.

The Pakistani skipper also said that wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal was considered for the job but added, "I don't think it would be fair on him because he is our wicket-keeper and it would be asking too much of him.— UNI
