Hiring is on... big time

Puja S. Navin

Educationplus No, it is not just for IT and ITES sectors. Bigwigs in hospitality and marketing too are sniffing around for the right ones.

The job market has never looked better. And why not, argues Hyderabad Centre Head of Mafoi Management Consultants, Vinod K. Meghrajani, "Tell me which economy is growing at eight per cent?"

There's growth opportunity in each and every sector today, he says, though in the city, we see only the extremely visible IT and ITES sectors climbing the never-ending growth chart.

Niraj Kumar Rana, Branch Manager of online recruitment site naukri.com says that more clients are advertising on the site. "Now we have 20,000 clients, which means more people can find a naukri."

List or recruiters

In addition, he adds a lot of companies are looking at stepping up hiring like HSBC, Google, Nipuna, Union Bank of Switzerland and Amazon.com to name a few. While the huge demand for IT and ITES sector continues sectors like retail, hospitality, sales and marketing will see a lot of action in hiring.

Reasons are simple. While Park group of hotels is coming up in the city, Viceroy acquired by Marriot group too will need to recruit big time. He also adds that some BPO companies are likely to take on knowledge process outsourcing work too. One area that is going to emerge is legal process outsourcing.

Social sector jobs

But its not just corporate jobs that are getting generated, social and services sectors and development jobs are also on the rise. Says Bhaskar Natarajan, Head-Centre of Competence at Dr. Reddy's Foundation, "This year we are looking at phenomenal hiring, with a lot of vacancies coming up in Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttaranchal.

Dr. Reddy's Foundation works on training individuals for livelihoods and they are getting more projects from the Government.

"We have 70 centres across the country and we are looking at doubling them in four months. As six people man each centre at least, you can just add up the numbers required in one Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative," he says.

Not just name

While opportunities are emerging by the day, it is important for applicants, especially the first time applicants not to get swayed by brand names and salary packages and sacrifice long-term career development for a few thousands, experts say.

"For a serious job seeker, it is important to analyse what kind of job he is getting into," says Mr. Rana. He must understand whether this is a career you would like to grow into. He feels this is what most overlooks getting tempted by brands and salaries.

The skills you develop in a job are important as those will open opportunities for you in future. Another important piece of advice is to have patience. Most companies would like to give in-house talent more responsibilities. So instead of jumping from one assignment to another, it is important to "claim your space," says Mr. Maharani. "You can grow only by proving your worth and giving yourself time to grow." So don't just grab any new job, search deep and long for the one that suits you and enables you to develop your skills.

New jobs

There are newer jobs emerging and it is also said by some experts that there will be an upward revision in salary packages. o if you are keen on Political Science, Economics, and Management, you will be surprised to know that there are jobs just for you and you need not get into most available sectors.

At POSCO Research in New Delhi, there are new assignments for those with research interests in Political Science, Economics and Management.

While getting into a job is easy, thanks to BPOs and call centres, finding the right one and developing a career is what takes time, but will be the most rewarding.
